FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answer: Volusia County, Florida
Question: When are your next litters due?
Answer: We have a year long active breeding program. Right now we do have both African Pygmy and Lesser Tenrec babies that will be ready to go home through DECEMBER 2025. You can email us directly to receive more information such as pictures and pricing and to be placed on the Waiting List. Our Wait List families always see pictures of available babies prior to them going public.
Question: Do you have a Waiting List?
Answer: Yes, we do and you can be added to it for a $25 non-refundable deposit. This deposit will be deducted from the final price of your hedgehog. During your wait time we provide you with updates and pictures. Once it is time for you to choose your baby we will contact you via email and phone with possible available babies. You will have up to 48 hours to respond regarding each baby you are offered so that we can move onto the next person in a timely manner. After that we will continue on to the next person on the Waiting List, but you will still remain on the Waiting List securely in your place and we will come back to you with the next available baby.
Question: What are your prices?
Answer: The adoption fees for our baby hedgehogs range from $250-$400. Your baby will come home in a small travel plastic bin carrying case and with an ample amount of food, some toys and a homemade snuggle sack, which we most definitely did not make ourselves but is crafted with care by Pistachio's Place. You will also receive your hedgehog's Hedgie List Registration Certificate as well as their pedigree which does NOT grant breeding rights. Pricing also reflects an increase for rarer colors and unique facial markings and patterns.
Question: Do I really need a heating system for my hedgehog in Florida?
Answer: YES, yes you do! You'll see in our Heating Guide that we explain African Pygmy Hedgehogs have to have their ambient temperature between 72-80 degrees at all times. Depending on how people keep their home temperature regardless of whether it is summer or winter, it is imperative that your hedgehog's environment remain in this range with the most preferred range between 75 and 78 degrees. The heating system recommended has a temperature gauge that you can set so your hedgehog will always have the most comfortable setting.
Question: Will my hedgehog keep me up at night?
Answer: Depending on where you have your hedgehog's habitat, they may keep you up at night. They are truly a nocturnal animal. In the wild, a hedgehog is most active at night and would be running sometimes miles through the course of one evening. They burrow and forage so in their habitat they will instead be running on their wheel and playing with whatever toys you choose to give them. It is very important to provide new toys for enrichment to keep your hedgehog engaged.
Question: Does my hedgehog need a buddy?
Answer: No your hedgehog does not need any buddy but you! Hedgehogs are solitary animals by nature so they really don't even need us or our company. That is why pedigreed breeders begin working with our babies from a young age by handling them for incremental periods every day. This is also why we carefully breed only hedgehogs with the best temperaments in order to help produce babies with good temperaments. Once your baby has left our house to come to yours, they will begin the bonding process with you. Your hedgehog does not, and should not, ever need to be housed with another hedgehog. Hedgehogs can become territorial in their surroundings and may fight if placed together especially males. And if a male and female are placed together they will reproduce which can be very dangerous when you aren't an experienced breeder with knowledge of their lineage and the many trials and tribulations that can come with breeding any animal species.
Question: Can my hedgehog play with my cat or dog?
Answer: All of our hedgehogs are just introduced to our boxer Dexter so they at least meet another mammal species before they leave the house as we know most of our families are probably going to have had a domestic pet prior to owning an exotic one. You'll have to see how things go once you have a hedgehog and try introducing them. All interactions must be supervised and guided by you so no injuries can occur to any animal.
Question: Can my hedgehog play outside?
Answer: Yes and no. We love taking the hedgehogs out for fresh air and little trips. Sometimes if one is in a grumpy mood it can also be a great mood breaker for everyone to take a break and walk. However, we are not a big fan of putting your hedgehog on the ground outside to roam. And NEVER put your Lesser Tenrec on the ground outisde. They are much faster then you may think and can easily get away. There are many reasons for this. One, in Florida there are many hawks who would love to grab a little prickly pear. Two, there are bugs they could get a hold of that may have bacteria or parasites. Three, there could be lawn treatments perhaps even if not in your yard from runoff in a neighbor's yard. SO we highly recommend the following: if you are going to bring your little buddy outside then keep a hold of them at all times, have them in a safe container or a safe playpen with covering that they cannot get out of, no predators can get into and no wiggly worms can be eaten out of!
Question: Which hedgehog breed is the right fit for me?
Answer: Now that you know we breed three different species, you may be wondering which one is the right fit for you which is a great question. Any pet is a commitment, any exotic pet even moreso. With an exotic pet you are venturing into areas of husbandry you may not be quite as familiar with and that is where you, your research, and our expertise come together to assist in determining the best fit for your home. You will be able to review all of our Information Guides that assist you in determining different items such as foods, wheels, and heating systems to select as well as inquire about specific hedgehogs available. You can take into consideration the different breeds and their specific needs when it comes to habitat enclosures, food and personality when deciding on which hedgehog is right for you. We will help you locate an exotic veterinarian in your area as this is imperative when owning an exotic pet as well as specializing in hedgehogs.
